The "Keep calm" phenomenon has it's roots in a British motivational poster created back in 1939. Everyone felt the oncoming of WW2, wild rumours about sudden bombings roamed free and the British Ministry of Information produced several posters to maintain the public morale. One of them was the "Keep calm and carry on" which -surprisingly enough- saw very limited use and was soon forgotten.
It was rediscovered in 2000, caught the attention of the public and eventually snowballed into an international meme, replete with British nostalgia and the soothing power of it's simple and straightforward message and looks. It strikes a note that quietly but firmly speaks about endurance, perseverance and making a stand in front of adversity.
I'm not too keen on using memes but this one caught my eye right from the start. I loved the original slogan and I think it's an amazing piece of motivational copywriting. Then I saw it being modified in various ways (some inspired, some just plain silly) and I realized that it could be used to convey a strong message about vaping and the use of e-cigs.
When you stop smoking and start vaping, you endure the psychological stress of kicking a habit and replacing it with something new -better but still unknown. Being a vaper often means starting out by yourself, feeling somehow isolated, having a rare hobby you cannot easily share and losing all those familiar little rituals that used to cut your day into more palatable pieces. The occasional gear-related problem doesn't help either. Granted, it's not too difficult but it may feel strange at first. A fellow vaper once called it "a very alone thing".
Then you gain experience, feel confident and cool, but you start to realize that your newfound pleasure is under attack from misinformed legislators, tax-hungry politicians, corporate lobbies and sensationalist media. The scientists are slowly coming on our side because the facts show the benefits in vaping. Unfortunately, the road to establishing vaping as an acceptable, safer alternative to smoking -one that is not pharmaceutical and not related to tobacco- is long and bumpy.
The need to overcome doubt, misgiving, defeatism and negativity : that's what my Keep Calm and Vape On product line wishes to convey. I chose the well known deep red color for this design, avoiding the colorful trends -but many are customizable to suit your tastes. Your response was amazing, especially on the posters and t-shirts! This is the standard best-seller (along with the Vape Letters classic) of Vapeorama and it was about time to say thanks to all of you for the love and support you've shown to this, my only meme-inspired vaping design!
